Satoshi

A satoshi, abbreviated as "sat," is the smallest unit of Bitcoin, named after its creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. There are 100 million sats in one Bitcoin (1 BTC = 100,000,000 sats), meaning the maximum supply of Bitcoin—21 million coins—translates to 2.1 quadrillion satoshis in total. This high level of divisibility allows for sending and receiving tiny fractions of Bitcoin, well below a cent in value at most exchange rates.

While people often talk about Bitcoin as full coins, the underlying software handles all transactions and balances in satoshis. Using sats helps make microtransactions possible and provides more precision for everyday payments.
